WHAT IS AN ACRYLIC PRINT? HOW IS IT MADE?
People sometimes call them “photo prints on glass or acrylic”, but there are a couple of different ways to create them, and my acrylic prints are actually not printed ON the acrylic. My lab uses the fine art, gallery-quality “face mounting” method, where the print is placed behind the acrylic and backed with DiBond (a rigid plastic core surrounded by two thin sheets of aluminum), and safely sealed in place. So when you look at the image, you look through the acrylic, and because of how light travels within it, you get a much more vibrant image with depth and colors that really pop. In the right light, it almost has a 3D look (the thicker the acrylic, the more 3D the look). Plus this method also gives you superior results in terms of color accuracy and permanence (no color fading).
The 1/8" and 1/4” thick acrylic glass is available on all print sizes, and the 1/2-inch acrylic is an option on prints up to 30x40 inches.
STANDARD vs. PREMIUM ACRYLIC GLASS
The main differences are the thickness of the glass and resistance to the environment.
➤ The Standard acrylic comes in 1/4 and 1/2 inches, whereas the Premium acrylic is only available as 1/8” thick.
➤ The Standard acrylic needs to be cleaned with a special cleaner and microfiber cloth - Windex and other harsher cleaners will damage it. The Premium acrylic is a lot more resistant, and can be cleaned with any ammonia-free glass cleaner.
➤ The Premium acrylic has a few other benefits as well:
• It’s less reflective
• More scratch-resistant
• Anti-static (doesn’t collect dust)
• Provides 99% UV protection (vs. 75% in the Standard acrylic).
HANGING SYSTEMS
1/4“ acrylic glass prints up to 24x36 inches have a wood & wire hanging system. 1/8" and 1/2“ acrylic prints (all sizes), and 1/4“ acrylic glass prints larger than 24x36 inches have a French cleat hanging system. Both systems floats your print ¾” from the wall and come with hanging instructions and hardware included.

Acrylic prints are currently only available in the contiguous US. I photographed this image during the first year of the pandemic, when our scheduled summer in Sweden was canceled at the last minute and we found ourselves without a place to live for four months (this nomad lifestyle can be a challenge at times!). With lockdowns everywhere, finding a place last minute turned out to be almost impossible, but thankfully, friends came to the rescue, and we ended up spending that summer in a beautiful house with a swimming pool. The shapes, patterns and shadows the sunshine created in the pool mesmerized me, and I spent a lot of time out there with my camera, which ended up resulting in a print series that so far consists of 3 images. This is the acrylic glass print version of the first print in that series.
